  Summer Workshop Schedule 2009

Cape Cod, MA

Intro to Smalti Mosaics - The Basics

If you would like to learn the fundamentals of using Italian smalti to create mosaic art, this  weekend workshop is a great start.  We will focus on the basic technical issues of creating mosaics with smalti: choosing an appropriate substrate, preparing the design for mosaicing, cutting smalti accurately with nippers, an intro to the traditional hammer/hardie, and laying techniques using the direct-set method for ungrouted mosaics.   Other techniques and applications specific to smalti mosaics will also be discussed.

Students will mosaic 1- 8"x 8" mosaic from a choice of several provided designs.  Each design was specifically selected to call upon the new skills and techniques covered.

This fast and fun workshop should provide you with the basic information you need to begin making your own smalti mosaics and the confidence to continue to explore the creative possibilities of Italian smalti.  This workshop is best suited for those with some previous mosaic experience but new to smalti, or for beginners committed to learning this exciting art form.  INSTRUCTOR:  Lynn Moor (www.lynnmoor.com )

DATES: June 27-28, 9am – 4pm  CLASS FILLED

4-Day Smalti Intensive: Beyond the Basics

This intimate workshop for four-to-six artists is for those wishing to go beyond the basics and explore

in-depth the various skills and artistic considerations of creating mosaics with Italian smalti.

We will cover the following, plus more:

DESIGN AND PREPARATION: Understanding the ‘Language of Smalti”; presentation of traditional and contemporary andamento choices, tile cuts, and placement options- and why/when/how to use each to maximize the impact of your design; design for the drawing-impaired: using drawings and photos; color theory for smalti mosaics: color blending, transitions and fading, value and contrast; calculating material needs, detailed cartoon preparation.

BUILDING THE MOSAIC:  Accurate cutting the wheeled cutters and creative cutting techniques with hammer/hardie; substrate options including mesh and “thinset only”  substrates; working with thinset mortar in the direct-set method for ungrouted mosaics; using thinset colorants to enhance design; working with mosaic gold.

Each artist will complete a 12x12 smalti mosaic using one of several provided designs (nature photos).  Designs are specifically selected to fit the teaching objectives of the course, giving participants the opportunity to immediately put into practice the techniques presented.  Your mosaic is yours to take home.

This course is best suited for serious students with some experience working with smalti and looking to expand their knowledge of skills and techniques for working with this beautiful material.
